Phil Neville, England’s new women’s football coach finds himself in a ‘sexist’ tweet controversy

Merely 24 hours after being appointed as the new head coach of England’s women’s football team, Phil Neville finds himself embroidered in a controversy that can be termed as both ‘sexist’ and ‘crass’. Neville, a former Manchester United and Everton defender, was subjected to a lot of flak on all social media platforms on Tuesday (January 23) after an old tweet from his long-standing twitter handle @fizzer18 surfaced on the internet.

A tweet dated December 3, 2012 from Neville’s account (@fizzer18) read:”U women of (sic) always wanted equality until it comes to paying the bills #hypocrites”. The former England defender had posted another tweet with the same sentiment, which read: “Morning men couple of hours cricket be4 (before) work sets me up nicely for the day.”

Asked why he’d only referred to men in his message, a reply on the account of Neville, — an ex-England schoolboy cricketer — said: “When I said morning men I thought the women would of been busy preparing breakfast/getting kids ready/making the beds-sorry morning women!”
