Get Excited About Your Trip Before You Depart

Once you continued working in order to save enough money for your grand adventure. Are there other things you could do to start feeling the joy of your future travel?

The answer to that question is obviously YES. Preparing yourself as much as possible in advance will increase your excitement and set you up for a great adventure.

Research

You probably hate that word because it reminds you of sitting in a library late at night as you write a term paper. But doing research for your travels will be inspiring because it will affect your travels in a very real way – instead of being part of a dry research paper.

Learn as much as possible about the places you plan to visit. Some of the basic things to know about the area you’ll be visiting –

  • Weather – so you pack correctly.
  • Visa – do you need one?
  • Medical – do you need to get any vaccinations?
  • Cost of living – plan your budget correctly.
  • Holidays – you might want to change your departure date to take advantage of arriving for a particular festival.

Connect

What if you could contact some locals before you ever arrive in the country you plan to visit? Wouldn’t you love landing at the airport and meeting up with people you’ve already been in contact with?

Impossible, you say? Well, here’s a way that might make it possible. This method works better if you’re near a large city.

Let’s take an example of someone living in Chicago and traveling to Argentina. Do an online search ‘argentina social organizations chicago.’ The results of the search will give –

  • Argentina Chicago Foundation – This association will give you the opportunity to volunteer with the organization in their efforts to build and improve schools in rural areas of Argentina.
  • International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago – This website is news about all Latinos and will help you find events in which you can meet expats in the Chicago area.
  • InterNations – This organization is not just for Argentinians in Chicago. It overs other expats in other cities. But if you’re in Chicago and going to Argentina, you can get in touch with Argentinians through InterNations who will probably be able to put you in touch with people still living in their home country.

If you get involved with one or all of these organizations, you will have the chance to network with people from the country you plan to visit. At the least, you can get advice from natives, and you’ll possibly be put in touch with locals still in the country.

Don’t Forget

In all your excitement, don’t forget to –

  • Make two copies of your passport – one for you that you’ll keep separate from the actual passport and one to leave with a friend.
  • Email important information to yourself – flight info, credit and debit card numbers, passport, driver’s license number, etc.
  • Inform your bank when you’re departing, where you expect to travel, and how long you’ll be gone. If any of that information changes while you’re on the road, contact the bank again to update the information.
  • Learn some phrases in the language of the country you’ll be visiting. Locals are often much more receptive to helping you when you’ve tried to communicate in their language – even if your skill leaves much to be desired.
  • Buy plug adapters if you use flat prongs in your home country but will need round prongs where you’re going – or vice versa. Buy more than you think you’ll need – it’s so easy to leave one behind still plugged in at your hotel.
  • Forget about converters to change electricity from 240 to 110. They often fail and just end up burning out your blow dryer or curling iron. A better idea is to buy one once you arrive and save for your next trip.
